Lives and homes may be in danger from a fast-moving and out-of-control bushfire in Western Australia's north, which was sparked by lightning.

A watch and act alert has been issued for people at Thangoo Homestead, Barn Hill Station, Eco Beach and surrounding areas in the Shire of Broome.

"The bushfire is moving fast in a westerly direction at six kilometres per hour," the WA Department of Fire and Emergency Services said.

"It is out of control and unpredictable," it said.

Burning embers are likely to be blown around homes and spot fires are starting ahead of the blaze, the department warned.

About 16 firefighters including volunteers are at the scene, fighting the fire, strengthening containment lines and building firebreaks, DFES said.

The blaze, which started on October 11, has so far burnt about 400,000 hectares.
