The Australian Olympic Committee will soon seek a replacement for executive board member Nicole Livingstone, who has taken a role with the AFL.

Triple Olympic swimmer Livingstone has been appointed the AFL's new head of women's football.

The AOC says it will replace Livingstone, who had been a board member since 2013, in due course.

"Nicole has made an outstanding and valuable contribution to the AOC and has been a strong advocate for all athletes," AOC president John Coates said in a statement on Friday.

Livingstone will retain her current role as director on Swimming Australia's board.

Livingstone described the growth of the women's AFL as extraordinary following a successful inaugural season earlier this year.

"Every Australian girl can now actively pursue footy as their passion, past-time or career," she said in a statement.

"Girls can now follow their dreams and as they do, we will continue to break down any barriers that may exist."

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan said the league was thrilled at Livingstone's appointment.

"It is fantastic to get a person of her quality to lead our new national league," he said in a statement.
