Residents from South Australia's southeast have converged on Adelaide in support of a Greens bid to enshrine in law a Liberal government election promise to ban fracking in the region.

The Liberals have imposed a 10-year moratorium on fracture stimulation for gas but Greens MP Mark Parnell says it means little if it isn't supported by legislation.

The Greens have brought a bill to state parliament's upper house to do just that with a group of about 30 people travelling from the southeast to the capital on Wednesday to support the move.

Businessman Angus Ralton said a legislated fracking ban would give companies confidence to invest in the region.

"Fracking will definitely contaminate our area and threaten our clean and green reputation," he said.

Mr Parnell said a vote for the Greens' bill in the Upper House would allow the Liberals to demonstrate that their election promise was a genuine commitment and not just "a lot of hot air".

"The Greens know that with a four-year electoral cycle, a 10-year political promise is worth very little unless it's legislated.

"That way, even if the government changes again at the next election or if the current leadership gets rolled before then, it will have to come back to parliament to overturn the ban."
