Long-time WBC president Sulaiman dies

Jose Sulaiman, who was president of the World Boxing Council for 38 years, has died aged 82.

Jose Sulaiman, who was president of the World Boxing Council for 38 years, has died aged 82. (AAP)

The long-serving president of the World Boxing Council (WBC), Jose Sulaiman has died aged 82.

The Mexican lead the council for 38 years and according to the Guinness Book of World Records he was the world's oldest serving president of a sports association.

Last November was given the title of president for life by the WBC.

"We deeply regret to inform the passing away of our dearest president Don Jose Sulaiman," the WBC said on its Twitter feed.

"May he rest in peace."

Sulaiman died in a hospital at the University of California Los Angeles having undergone bypass surgery in October.
