Two months on from winning a host of Grammys, New Zealand singing phenomenon Lorde has now nailed a Brit Award against some of the biggest names in the business.

The 17-year-old Devonport schoolgirl described the win as a "priceless surprise", beating out competition from Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Pink and Janelle Monae.

"I'm still so new to getting awards that my brain feels like it's exploding every time it happens, so forgive me," she told the star-studded ceremony.

"Thank you to the strong, intelligent, inspiring women in this category. This really was a priceless surprise."

The Brit awards were held at London's O2 Arena on Thursday morning (AEDT), where Lorde, dressed in a long black sequined dress, performed a version of Royals with English electronic duo Disclosure.

Host James Corden described the duo as "two of the biggest new acts to come through this year".

Online betting site Sports Betting Dime had been picking Katy Perry to win the award, with Lorde as the second favourite.

In January, Lorde won song of the year and best pop solo performance for her breakout hit Royals at the Grammy Awards.
