Lower petrol prices could boost spending

Consumer confidence levels are down, but falling petrol prices could encourage people to spend more, ANZ's chief economist says.

Consumer confidence is waning but lower petrol prices should help turn that around.

Confidence fell 0.3 per cent last week, a small setback following a 1.2 per cent rise in the previous week, according to the ANZ/Roy Morgan consumer confidence survey.

Households were more concerned about their current financial position last week, Tuesday's figures show.

ANZ chief economist Warren Hogan said confidence was trending higher overall, although the pace of improvement was disappointing.

Lower petrol prices could give consumer confidence a boost, he said, although that may be offset if weakness on the share market continues.

"The fall in petrol prices should be a small positive for households as lower petrol prices boost real income which could then be used to lift discretionary spending," Mr Hogan said.

"This may also provide some boost to confidence in coming months."

Petrol prices have begun to ease thanks to a drop in world oil prices.
