Lucky escape as cop car hits Sydney house

A police vehicle has crashed into a Sydney house, slightly injuring a couple inside.

A Sydney couple were lucky to escape serious injury when a police car crashed into their home.

Robert England, 68, and his wife Jean, 55, were in their bed when a Dog Unit vehicle lost control and left the road, hitting their Smithfield home in the city's west at 5.30am on Tuesday.

The car was on its way to a call at Fairfield Heights.

Mr England said his wife happened to reach over for her mobile phone when the car smashed into the side of their house.

He said falling bricks narrowly missed her head.

"(The car) has taken the corner of the house out," he told the Seven Network.

"The bricks then fell on where my wife was lying in bed."

The couple sustained minor injuries and were treated by paramedics on site. They did not require hospital treatment.

The police officer and his dog were not hurt.

Comment was being sought from NSW police.
