Government officials have defended spending more than $90,000 on a luggage lift in the prime minister's Canberra home.

Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet deputy secretary Elizabeth Kelly said the lift in The Lodge had been recommended by the refurbishment architects as a way of protecting the heritage value of the stairs and balustrade and was installed after a staffer was injured carrying luggage.

"Preserving the the stairs, including the balustrade, is important in preserving the heritage of the house," she said, adding that it was put on the plans in 2010 under the Gillard government.
