Luke backs Hayne's Olympics bid

Warriors hooker Issac Luke has backed Jarryd Hayne's latest code switch to sevens rugby in the hope of playing for Fiji at the Olympics.

Jarryd Hayne's bid to make the Olympic Games with the Fiji sevens team has the backing of Warriors NRL hooker Issac Luke.

Former Parramatta star Hayne made the shock announcement this week that he was quitting the NFL after one season with the San Francisco 49ers to have a crack at getting to Rio in August.

As well as his 12 Kangaroos caps, Hayne, who has Fijian heritage, has represented Fiji in four rugby league Tests.

"I know the true love he has for Fiji," Luke said on Wednesday.

"Jarryd has been taking Pacific Islanders around the world with him in being able to showcase his talents and being able to represent us as well.

"He's doing a fantastic job and congrats to him if he does make the Fiji team."

Fiji top the sevens world series table ahead of this weekend's final round in London.

Luke acknowledged there would be plenty of competition for spots in their Olympic squad.

"I know they've got some stars in that team," he said.

"I know he's going to love it and we're all behind him as well."

As for whether Hayne might return to the NRL after the Olympics, Luke said: "I guess it's up to him. I know that wherever he goes, he's got a great following."

Warriors coach Andrew McFadden, asked if the Auckland club were in the hunt for Hayne's signature, replied with a laugh: "I don't think we've got that sort of money".
