Fremantle coach Ross Lyon will call the AFL's umpiring department in the coming days after his team were penalised for a bizarre infringement in Saturday's 32-point win over Geelong.

The Cats received a controversial free kick in the third quarter after Dockers tagger Ryan Crowley clattered into Joel Selwood as the Geelong skipper made his way onto the ground.

But Crowley was an unwilling participant in the saga.

The 30-year-old couldn't avoid contact after being dragged into Geelong's interchange area by his opponent Steve Johnson.

Crowley was gobsmacked when the free kick was called, and Lyon wants the umpires to use more common sense in the future.

"It's a concern. I'd like to think it would be reviewed," Lyon said.

"I don't tend to ring much, but I'll certainly ring about that - just for clarification in the best interests of the AFL.

"Sometimes when you think there's an injustice you can get frustrated, but I just said to Ryan, 'Keep your cool'.

"But it was great gamesmanship and theatre."

Lyon will also want to sort out some issues with his runner Shaun Tinsley.

Tinsley was twice penalised for getting too close to the play during the 13.18 (96) to 9.10 (64) win.

The former WAFL defender spent notable periods of the game stationed in the middle of the oval, but Lyon denied there was anything sinister behind Tinsley's tactics.

"He's a bit slow," Lyon said.

"I certainly didn't use a runner for coaching.

"They like to stay out there because I yell at them a bit. So there's not much incentive to come back (to the bench).

"But yeah, he got in the way. We don't want them in the way and it's not typical of how we operate.

"That would be his first free kick in a long time."
