Spinner Nathan Lyon has lauded the efforts of Australian quicks Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood in oppressive conditions during the first Test against Bangladesh.

Cummins tore through Bangladesh's top order to give Australia the early advantage on day one in Dhaka before the hosts stole back the momentum late in the day.

In hot, humid weather and on a dry, spin-friendly, pitch, Cummins still managed to menace the opposition batsmen with speed and bounce.

It took just five balls for him to strike, squaring up Soumya Sarker with a well-pitched delivery which was caught by Peter Handscomb at gully.

Cummins then had Imrul Kayes and Sabbir Rahman caught behind in quick succession to leave Bangladesh reeling at 3-10.

The hosts regrouped through Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal, who put on a 155-run fourth-wicket stand, but there was no doubting the importance of Cummins' early blitz.

Playing just his fourth Test in a hugely promising but injury-affected career, Cummins was less effective as the day went on, with the draining 75 per cent humidity in Dhaka making it tough going for the bowlers.

He finished with 3-63 off 16 overs, while Hazlewood sent down an economical 0-39 off 15.

Lyon was full of praise for the pair, who managed the heat with cold showers during breaks, hydrating slushies and icy poles.

"I think Patty cracked the game open for us but then they had a (big) partnership," Lyon said.

"Patty's an unbelievable bowler, so is Josh.

"The amount of effort that goes in from those two to go in and perform like they did in those type of conditions .... it was pretty tough out there, I'm not going to lie.

"It was probably one of the toughest days Ive had in Test match cricket with the heat and the humidity (so) I'm pretty proud of those guys."
