French president Emmanuel Macron's two-year-old Labrador-Griffon cross Nemo relieved himself on an ornamental fireplace in front of his owner and junior ministers at a meeting at the Élysée Palace.

The cheeky canine was hovering around the feet of Mr Macron during a meeting at the weekend on inner-city investment before he cocked his leg and urinated against the opulent fireplace.

Junior minister Julien Denormandie could not contain his laughter before Mr Macron caught on to Nemo's behaviour.

“I wondered what that noise was,” Minister for Ecology Brune Poirson said as she was interrupted, The Guardian reported.

“Does that happen often?” Julien Denormandie asked.

“You have sparked a totally unusual behaviour in my dog,” Mr Macron said.
Nemo was the 'first dog' at the Élysée Palace for Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron and was adopted from an animal rescue centre.

The Labrador-Griffon cross is believed to be named after Captain Nemo who commands the Nautilus in the classic Jules Venre novel, 'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea'.
