The union representing workers at Australia's peak science organisation has moved to stop forced redundancies at the CSIRO.

The Community and Public Sector Union lodged a dispute with the Fair Work Commission in Melbourne on Tuesday after union leaders addressed about 15 protesters outside the Exhibition Street building.

The CSIRO is cutting hundreds of jobs as it reprioritises its research activities.

The CPSU claims certain individuals and business units are being targeted by management for redundancy and that a proper procedure is being ignored.

"We are proposing to the Fair Work Commission that the cuts are suspended until a fair and proper process is implemented," Sam Popovski, secretary of the CSIRO staff association, which is part of the CPSU, said.

Association president Michael Borgas said cuts to the CSIRO would hamper innovation in Australia.

"You can't innovate with ignorance, which they're asking us to do," he said.

The Fair Work Commission is still considering a previous dispute over consultation around the CSIRO job cuts.

The CSIRO has been contacted for comment.
