Forward Patrick Karnezis has announced his retirement after an injury-plagued five-year AFL career with Brisbane and Collingwood.

Karnezis was selected by Brisbane with pick 25 in the 2010 national draft and went on to play 21 games for the Lions.

The 23-year-old was traded to the Magpies at the end of 2013 and managed just four senior games at the club, all of them this year.

"After five years in the AFL system, it is the right time for me to step away and pursue other interests in my life such as my studies, overseas travel and opportunities in our family businesses," Karnezis said.
