High performance manager Bill Davoren is a surprise casualty of Collingwood's AFL football department review.

The Magpies have also sacked assistant coach and former star forward Anthony Rocca.

Their departures were announced on Wednesday, two days after senior coach Nathan Buckley was reappointed.

Changes were inevitable after Collingwood missed the finals for the fourth year in a row.

Football director Geoff Walsh has overseen the review, one of three into various aspects of club operations.

Rocca's departure comes after fellow assistant Scott Burns had left last week to join Hawthorn in a similar role.

Davoren, the former Australian Olympic triathlon coach, joined Collingwood in late 2013 after roles at the Western Bulldogs and St Kilda.

While there are many problems at Collingwood, player fitness had not been seen as one of them - a key part of Davoren's role.

"Bill brought experience and knowledge from both his football and athletics backgrounds to the high performance team over the past four years and we thank him for his commitment to the role during that time," Walsh said in a statement.

"Anthony has had a great impact at this club as both a player and coach and has most recently played a role in the development of some of our young talent such as Brodie Grundy and Darcy Moore."
