Collingwood have been forced to find a replacement for premiership defender Alan Toovey who broke down at training on Friday with a back injury.

The Magpies have made five changes for Sunday's AFL clash with Adelaide at the MCG, recalling swingman Ben Reid and small forward Jamie Elliott from injury and promoting Lachie Keeffe and inexperienced duo Tim Broomhead and Kyle Martin.

They replace the injured Luke Ball (back), Brownlow Medallist Dane Swan (foot), former skipper Nick Maxwell (retired), Toovey and Josh Thomas who has been omitted.

Toovey has missed only one game for the Magpies this season.

Broomhead, 20, has been named on a wing and will play his third senior game in his debut season.

The 23-year-old Martin played four games in his debut year in 2013 and Sunday will be the half-forward's first senior match of the season.

Collingwood have slipped to a 9-7 win-loss record after suffering four defeats in their past five games.

Adelaide sit one win further back on 8-8 and coach Brenton Sanderson says the Crows will relish the chance to play on the big stage.

The Crows have dropped Ben Rutten and Jason Porplyzia while David Mackay and back pocket Luke Thompson return to the side.

Mackay and centreman Scott Thompson are both battling hamstring concerns but Sanderson says he's quietly confident both will play.
