Reni Maitua has avoided having his NRL contract torn up by Canterbury following his suspension for breaking the club's code of contract.

Maitua was suspended from all duties last month after he was charged with assault of a taxi driver, putting his future in the code in doubt.

But the club's board on Wednesday reinstated the 31-year-old, who rejoined the Bulldogs this year after previously playing for them between 2004 and 2008.

It comes with strict boundaries, however, which includes the one-time Australia representative agreeing to a complete alcohol ban.

"Reni is acutely aware of the expectations required of him and he is determined to be an integral member of this club in 2014," Bulldogs chief executive Raelene Castle said in a statement.

"He is committed to the conditions placed around him and recognises that he can play a role in working with younger athletes to share his learnings from his time in the game."
