Make hay while the sun sets

Conventional wisdom suggests the best of the batting conditions are in the sunlit opening session of day-night Tests, but the early numbers suggest otherwise.

WHAT THE NUMBERS SAY ABOUT THE BEST TIME TO BAT IN DAY-NIGHT TESTS:

* There have only been two day-night Tests, but the early numbers indicate the middle twilight session between the tea and dinner breaks is the best time to bat.

* The statistics also suggest it's just as tough batting in the opening session in full sunshine as it is batting under the full effects of the lights in the final session.

* In the inaugural day-night Test between Australia and New Zealand last summer, the opening session on the three days produced 224 runs and 17 wickets - an average of 17.23 per wicket. The evening session was almost identical - 251 runs for 14 wickets at 17.73.

* By comparison, the middle session was almost twice as productive for batsmen - 340 runs for the loss of 10 wickets at an average of 34 per wicket.

* The only other day-night Test between Pakistan and the West Indies in Dubai last month produced comparable results. The opening and final sessions produced averages of 37.6 and 37.15 on a decidedly flat track, while in the middle session the average was 48.20 per wicket.
