The Turnbull government is urging companies to make the internet-connected products they sell, such as baby monitors, safe from cyber attacks.

The minister responsible for cybersecurity Dan Tehan says with 50 billion devices expected to be connected to the internet by 2020, companies should have in-built cybersecurity.

It is "just reprehensible" that people have been able to hack into baby monitors and take photos of sleeping babies, he told Sky News on Sunday

More broadly, Mr Tehan said cyber espionage is "alive and well".

However, asked repeatedly whether China - Australia's largest trading partner - was behind such activity, Mr Tehan said the government didn't name countries it believed was responsible for those actions.

"One of the difficulties we have, it is very difficult to have a 100 per cent certainty as to who is behind this activity," he said.

But he warned as Australia capabilities and techniques grow, it might come out and name states.
