Malawi stay unbeaten at Netball World Cup

Malawi have beaten Uganda on the first day of Netball World Cup qualification rounds, while South Africa stayed consistent against Wales.

Malawi have extended their undefeated Netball World Cup run with a 59-53 win over Uganda at Sydney's Allphones Arena.

Led by Mainland Tactix star attacker Mwai Kumwenda, the world No.6 Queens outlasted a late rally from the 14th-ranked She Cranes in their first qualification round match on Tuesday.

Uganda spearhead Peace Proscovia led the fightback, scoring 16 goals in the final quarter - nearly double that managed by Kumwenda (9).

Earlier, South Africa continued their good form with an emphatic 68-40 defeat of Wales, as Lenize Potgieter showed off her sharp shooting skills for the Proteas with 49 goals from 57 attempts.

Trinidad and Tobago also beat Zambia 66-39, while Samoa saw off Singapore 46-39 and Scotland edged Barbados 37-34.

Under the new World Cup format, the top two teams from each preliminary pool move into two top-eight pools while the bottom two teams are split into another two pools to fight for placings.

The most successful two teams from each of the top-eight pools move into the semi-finals.
