Finally, Shaun Marsh feels his Test career is headed in the right direction.

On his sixth coming to Test cricket, Marsh played a match-defining innings as Australia claimed a tense three-wicket win against New Zealand in the inaugural day-night Test in Adelaide.

Marsh's composed 49 may have saved his Test career - it certainly saved Australia in the third Test as they reached their 187-run target with just three wickets remaining.

The much-maligned lefthander came to the crease with Australia 3-66 and wasn't dismissed until the hosts needed just 11 more runs for victory.

"It was tough work," Marsh told the Nine Network.

"They bowled really well today and made us work really hard ... so happy to get over the line."

Marsh's recall to the Test team was controversial and only came because of the hamstring injury to Usman Khawaja.

But he demonstrated a cool temperament, saying he'd learnt the lessons from the Ashes tour of England last winter when he failed to cope with the moving ball.

"It is something I have worked hard on in the last few months to try and get better at. I knew I had to ge better at it," he said.

"There is still a lot of work there to do but it's heading in the right direction."'
