Sydney Roosters five-eighth James Maloney has signed to join Cronulla from the 2016 NRL season.

The 29-year-old former NSW State of Origin five-eighth will join the shire-based club on a three-year deal after playing 65 games with the Roosters and winning a premiership in 2013.

Maloney is still looking at further success before he leaves at the end of the season.

"This definitely hasn't been an easy decision for me. The Roosters have been great to me and my family since I got here and I've made some life-long mates at the club," Maloney told the Roosters' website.

"While it's sad to be leaving the club and the boys, now that my future is sorted out, my main focus right now is doing the best job I can for the Roosters for the rest of this year."
