Man, 72, in court over aged home attack

A 72-year-old Sydney nursing home resident has appeared in court accused of attacking a fellow resident with a knife.

A 72-year-old man has appeared in court after allegedly attacking another elderly man with a knife at a Sydney aged care home.

Christos Tsekar was remanded in custody in the Sutherland Local Court on Monday charged with wounding another 72-year-old man at the Uniting Bruce Sharpe Lodge at Rockdale, in Sydney's south.

Emergency workers called to the scene just after 7pm on Sunday found the alleged victim, Paul Raymond Jay, with cuts to his neck, arms and hands, police said.

Mr Jay was taken to St George Hospital in a serious condition and was expected to undergo surgery on Monday.

Police have been told Tsekar, a resident at the nursing home, allegedly entered one of the rooms armed with a knife and attacked the other man before fleeing the scene.

He has been charged with wounding or causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder.

Members of Tsekar's family were in court for his brief appearance in the dock on Monday afternoon.

The case was adjourned until Tuesday for a possible bail application.

Tsekar's son, who did not wish to give his name, told reporters he had not been allowed to see his father since his arrest.

"I haven't spoken to him so I have no idea what's happening right now," he said outside court.

Uniting director of residential and health care services Saviour Buhagiar said staff had followed all critical incident procedures after the alleged attack.

"Uniting is in contact with the families involved, and will provide every support to all of our residents, their families and staff," she said in a statement.

Tsekar is expected to appear in Sydney's Central Local Court on Tuesday.
