A man has allegedly led police on a dramatic car chase through Sydney after carjacking a luxury car.

Police say a 46-year-old man was in his parked black Audi A5 in Redfern on Saturday when a man appeared at the passenger door wielding a knife.

The car owner complied with the man's demands for the car, police say.

Not long after, the car failed to stop at a random breath test site in Darlington.

A police chase began but was soon called off after the car rammed a stationary vehicle.

The car was later spotted in Stanmore before it drove into the grounds of Sydney University and crashed into a wall.

With a police helicopter hovering above, officers managed to arrest the man after he fled on foot.

The 36-year-old was charged with a string of offences, including car jacking, and is due to appear in Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday.
