Man arrested after stand-off with police

A man has been arrested and charged with assault after a stand-off with police in northeast NSW.

A man who allegedly assaulted a woman has been arrested after a stand-off with police at a home in NSW's northeast.

Police say the 25-year-old man assaulted the woman at about 10.30pm on Saturday at a home in Goonellabah near Lismore.

A 40-year-old man who witnessed the alleged assault attempted to intervene and was threatened by the younger man who had armed himself with a knife.

The younger man fled the scene to another home and the witness contacted police.

Police say the occupants refused to cooperate with officers and threw objects at them from the balcony.

Following a brief stand-off with police, officers entered the premises and arrested the 25-year-old man.

He has been charged with armed with intent to commit indictable offence, common assault and resist officer in execution of their duty.

He was refused bail to appear before Lismore Local Court on Sunday.
