Man arrested after Sydney explosions

A man who allegedly fled the scene after a blast at a home in Sydney's inner-west has been arrested by police.

A 32-year-old man who allegedly fled after explosions rocked a street in Sydney's inner-west has been arrested, police say.

Emergency services raced to Wentworth Park Road in Glebe just after 5pm on Wednesday after reports of an explosion and fire at a public housing apartment block.

The explosion forced the evacuation of residents and brought peak-hour traffic and the light rail system to a halt.

Firefighters got the blaze under control and found items that are believed to be linked to the blast.

Police are examining whether the apartment was being used as a drugs laboratory or as a possible home-made bomb factory.

Bomb squad officers removed gas bottles from the apartment on Wednesday, but it remained unclear precisely what caused the explosions.

Witnesses say they saw a man fleeing the building seconds before the blasts.

Detectives arrested a 32-year-old man outside a cafe on Abercrombie St in Redfern at 9.30am on Thursday, police say.

The man, who has a small burn on his hand which is being treated, is assisting police with their inquiries.

Investigations are continuing, police say.
