NSW homicide detectives believe they have found the man responsible for the brutal sex assault and murder of Sydney teenager Mahmoud Hrouk two months ago.
The discovery of the 16-year-old's bloodied, partially clothed body in a vacant house in Fairfield East shocked the local community and seasoned detectives alike.
As recently as Wednesday, investigators said they were struggling to understand why anyone would want to hurt Mahmoud, an aspiring football player who spent weekends at matches with his mum and counted his uncles among his close friends.
But on Thursday afternoon, detectives made an arrest.
A 22-year-old man was taken into custody at Fairfield Police Station and is expected to be charged with murder and aggravated sexual assault.
Mahmoud had gone to the McDonald's in Villawood with his friends on the night of May 16.
He was on the phone to his mother, who was due to pick him up, about 9.40pm, but family say the call cut out.
Police believe that was around the time Mahmoud was killed.
The next day, family members scoured the streets of Fairfield East for the teenager before discovering his body in an empty house on Belmore Street, just walking distance away from the Hrouk home.
