A man has been arrested after he racially abused three Muslim women on a Melbourne train, and then assaulted another man who came to their defence.

It's alleged two men racially abused the women on a Craigieburn-bound train at Melbourne Central on May 15.

When a fellow passenger confronted the men, he was assaulted by one of the pair, police say.

The 20-year-old Broadmeadows man was arrested and interviewed on Friday and is expected to be charged on summons.
