A man has been arrested following the murder of a woman in Sydney's west.

The 33-year-old man was arrested shortly after 7pm on Saturday at a property in Guildford West, nine hours after the body of Leila Alavi, 26, was found dead in a car in an underground carpark at an Auburn shopping centre.

The man has been taken to Auburn Police Station where he is assisting police with their inquiries

Initial examinations suggest Ms Alavi had suffered a stab wound, however the crime scene is still being processed.

Local police, with the assistance of detectives from the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad, are continuing their inquiries into the incident.

Ms Alavi worked in the area and was well known to locals near the shopping centre on Harrow Road.

"We both got here at 8am and parked our cars," cafe owner Zeynep Zabinoglu told News Corp Australia.

"I said good morning to her and she said good morning and we both went to work."

Police were working with the theory there was a domestic violence element to the murder, and had been searching for her partner.
