Police were called to Royal Avenue just after 9.30pm (AEDT) on Monday to find the old Springvale police station and courthouse well alight.

Within an hour, there were three more fires in the area, including two at the back of shops on Springvale Road and one on Warrick Avenue, police said.

Officers arrested a man nearby at 10.45pm (AEDT) and he was taken to Dandenong police station for questioning.

The old police station suffered extensive damage to the front and roof, and there was scorch damage to the front of the old courthouse, police said.
