A man has been stabbed four times with a pair of scissors in a brutal attack on a Sydney street.

Police found a 64-year-old man on the street in Redfern on Saturday night with four stab wounds to his abdomen and back.

Officers have been told four males attacked the man as he walked on the footpath.

"He was punched and fell to the ground where the group continued to kick and punch him before stabbing him with a knife and a pair of scissors," police said in a statement.

The man is in hospital in a stable condition and will undergo surgery.

Investigators are looking for four men - including one of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Island appearance and another man of Caucasian appearance in his late teens - last seen fleeing the area.
