A man has been attacked with a tomahawk during a fight on a Melbourne street.

The 20-year-old was approached by a man and a woman outside a Heidelberg house on Sunday night and struck with the tomahawk, police say.

The attackers fled with an accomplice in a car and the victim was taken to hospital with a superficial head wound.

A witness told the Nine Network the man's head was cut open and he was screaming that he had "just got tomahawked to the head".
