A man accused of assaulting a woman on New Year's Day, causing her to potentially lose sight in one eye, has been released from custody.

A man accused of bashing a woman during an argument on New Year's Day has been released on bail.

Cameron Allan Smith allegedly assaulted a 41-year-old woman after they got into a fight with a woman at a unit in Nambucca Heads on NSW's mid north coast.

Police say the woman suffered injuries to her eye, ear, stomach and neck and was taken to Macksville District Hospital.

She is due to undergo surgery and may lose sight in one eye, police say.

Smith, who has since been charged with recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm, attempting to choke, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, was granted strict conditional bail when he appeared at Coffs Harbour Court on Friday.
