Man bashed at WA detention centre

A man is in a critical condition after suffering face and head injuries in an alleged assault at a WA immigration detention centre.

A man is in a critical condition after allegedly being attacked at an immigration detention centre.

A St John Ambulance spokesman said paramedics rushed the man from Yongah Hill Detention Centre, northeast of Perth, to Northam Hospital about 6.16pm on Thursday.

He said the man, aged in his 40s, had face and head injuries from an alleged assault.

After being assessed at Northam, the man was taken to Royal Perth Hospital, where he is in a critical condition.

The Department of Immigration and Border Protection confirmed there had been an incident among several detainees at the centre on Thursday afternoon.

It said service provider Serco would provide a full report on the incident. Police had also been informed.

Yongah Hill was set up to house single male asylum seekers in 2012 but now contains a mix of asylum seekers and convicted criminals, including visa overstayers.

A department spokesman said none of the individuals involved were "illegal maritime arrivals".

A Serco spokesman said officers took immediate action to "de-escalate" the incident and ensure that care could be provided as quickly as possible.
