A witness says he saw an Asian man pull a knife from the body of a Melbourne man who was beaten to the ground and murdered outside a convenience store.
Luke Mitchell, 29, was fatally stabbed at a 7/Eleven store in Brunswick, just minutes after a confrontation with a group of men on the popular Sydney Road night-life strip.
Witnesses described seeing a group of up to five Asian men pile out of a car which had screeched into the store's car park to launch a lightning fast attack on Mr Mitchell.
Thai national Sarud Seehaverachart, 31, and dual Thai-Australian citizen Thatiya Terdputham, 38, are charged with Mr Mitchell's murder in May 2009.
John Kostantinakos told the Melbourne Magistrates Court he was sitting in his parked car outside the store when men attacked Mr Mitchell.
He said Mr Mitchell saw the men charging at him and tried to flee past his car, before being knocked to the ground.
"One of them put his hand on the roof of my car and jumped up to kick him in the face," Mr Kostantinakos said on Tuesday.
Another witness, Patrick Tawas, was in a car when the group set upon Mr Mitchell.
He said he tried to reverse out of the car park when he saw the men punch and kick Mr Mitchell.
When he glanced back at the scene of the attack he saw a man standing over Mr Mitchell remove a knife from his body before dropping it on the ground.
"It clanged, that metal on concrete sound, it's stuck in my head," he told the court.
Both Seehaverachart and Terdputham were extradited from Thailand to face the charge.
The committal hearing continues.
