A knife-wielding man who allegedly led police on a dramatic car chase before crashing a luxury vehicle into a wall at Sydney University will remain behind bars.

Dwain McDonald is accused of car-jacking an Audi A5 in Redfern after demanding the car from its 46-year-old driver on Saturday.

McDonald then allegedly failed to stop at a random breath test site at Darlington.

Police gave chase but called it off soon after when the Audi rammed into a stationary vehicle.

The car was later spotted in Stanmore before it was driven into the Sydney University grounds and crashed into a wall.

McDonald, 35, allegedly fled on foot.

But with the help of a police helicopter hovering above, officers managed to arrest him.

He appeared briefly in Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday, charged with a string of offences including car-jacking.

The Wentworthville man did not apply for bail and the case was adjourned to May 28.
