A young man who allegedly agreed to be set alight with aerosols and flammable liquids at a party in Sydney's north is in hospital with burns to his back.

Police say the 18-year-old was with friends at the party in Collaroy Plateau at about 12.20am on Sunday when the incident took place.

He sustained "superficial but excessive burns to his back" and was taken by ambulance to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition.

Officers attended the party venue and arrested another 18-year-old man who is assisting police with their inquiries at Dee Why Police Station.
