Police have charged a Melbourne man after witnesses told police he abandoned his baby son at a tram stop in freezing conditions.

The father of a baby abandoned at Melbourne tram stop in freezing conditions has been charged with endangering his son's life.

The 31-year-old Caulfield South man was charged with recklessly endangering life after witnesses alleged he left the baby at a tram stop on Glenhuntly Road in Glen Huntly after 10pm on Wednesday night, police say.

He was bailed to appear at Moorabbin Magistrates' Court on September 10.
