A man will face court after he allegedly attacked another man with a pole in Sydney's CBD.

Police say an argument broke out between the two men, aged 52 and 66, at King Street in the city at about 9.30pm (AEDT) on Friday.

During the fight, it is alleged that the 52-year-old grabbed a pole and struck the older man in the head and body with it.

The older man was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance Paramedics, before being taken to St Vincent's Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.

The younger man was arrested and later charged with malicious wounding causing grievous bodily harm.

He was refused bail to appear before Parramatta Local Court on Saturday.
