A man has been charged with murder over the death of Sydney underworld figure Lynn Tasman Jones.

The skeletal remains of the 69-year-old former safecracker and fraudster from Sydney's east were discovered by bushwalkers in October 2013 in the Royal National Park.

Police believe he was murdered almost four years earlier and his body dumped by a roadside.

A 69-year-old Redfern man has been charged with murder and is due to appear at Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday.

Jones' car, a 1991 Toyota Camry station wagon, has never been recovered but at the time of Jones' disappearance, it had been issued with a parking ticket in inner Sydney.

Police said that fine was paid in cash just days later at a Sydney post office.

Two months ago, detectives announced a reward of $100,000 for information relating to the murder.

Acting on information from the appeal, officers stopped a vehicle on Friday morning at Cecil Hills and arrested the Redfern man.
