A man has been charged over a police pursuit, in which his passenger suffered life-threatening injuries.

A man has been charged over a police pursuit that left a Victorian woman fighting for her life.

Andrew Simpson, 27, was charged on Saturday with recklessly causing serious injury, negligently causing serious injury, evading police and bail-related offences.

Police allege they tried to pull over a car in the Melbourne suburb of Preston about 5.10am Saturday (AEST), but the vehicle drove off and officers lost sight of it.

The car was found a short time later crashed into a power pole.

Its passenger, an 18-year-old Mernda woman, was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where she remains critically injured.

The male driver allegedly fled, police said.

Simpson, of Craigieburn, was remanded in custody to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday.

Major collision detectives are inquiring into the pursuit under the oversight of professional standards command.
