A man will face court after another man was stabbed to death in front of shoppers in a horrific scene in a major western Sydney shopping centre.

The 35-year-old man has been charged with murder over the death of a 40-year-old man inside the Westfield mall in Parramatta on Monday morning.

It is believed an argument over a girlfriend triggered the killing.

Horrified onlookers watched as the man allegedly repeatedly stabbed the other man to death, leaving the knife lodged in the victim's chest.

The man was charged after being questioned by police for more than 12 hours.

Refused bail, he is to appear at Parramatta Local Court on Tuesday.
