A man is fighting for his life after allegedly being attacked by his brother-in-law at a motel in Sydney's southwest.

The 34-year-old claims his 36-year-old brother-in-law hit him in the head with a pick-axe during the assault in Liverpool on Friday night before dousing him with petrol.

The alleged victim retaliated with a baseball bat, before being taken to Liverpool District Hospital with a broken jaw, missing teeth and a broken arm, police said.

The 36-year-old remains at large.
