A man is in a critical condition after he was crushed between a taxi and another car at the main entrance to Melbourne Airport.

The man aged in his 30s was hit by the taxi outside the international terminal early on Wednesday morning.

Ambulance Victoria said the man was stabilised at the scene before being taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition with a serious leg injury.

Another man was hit by the cab and was also taken to hospital but in a stable condition with injuries to his head and shoulder.

Police are investigating and have spoken to the taxi driver.

The collision caused major delays for commuters heading to the airport with Departures Drive closed and traffic diverted for five hours. The road has been reopened.
