A man has died and another is injured after a gyrocopter crashed in water near Melbourne.

The injured man has been taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable but serious condition, while the other man, who was trapped, died after the homemade helicopter crashed at about midday on Sunday at Cannons Creek, 60km southeast of Melbourne.

About 1100 AusNet Services customers lost power but half have been reconnected and generators are being taken to others, a spokesman told AAP.

It was unclear when normal services would resume due to ongoing investigations into the crash, the spokesman added.

"It appears at this stage the craft went down and landed in shallow water," police said.

"The exact cause of the incident is yet to be determined."
