A man died when his car crashed into a tree in Melbourne's northern suburb of Lalor.

A man has died in a single-vehicle accident in Melbourne's northern suburb of Lalor.

The man, the only occupant of the car, died when he crashed into a tree near Monash Street about 2am (AEST) on Thursday, police said.

Witnesses have been asked to contact Crime Stoppers.
