A man's body has been recovered after a house fire in Sydney's southwest.

Emergency services called to the Glenfield home found it well alight about 3pm on Saturday.

A man, believed to be the resident, was caught in the blaze and died.

Fire and Rescue NSW say a nine-kilogram gas cylinder was knocked down and the home badly damaged.

Neighbours reportedly tried to rescue the man, but were pushed back by the smoke.

Early investigations indicate the fire was not suspicious and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
