Man dies after accidental shooting

A man has died in the central west of NSW after accidentally shooting himself.

A man has died in a NSW hospital after accidentally shooting himself with a rifle.

Police say that at around 1pm (AEDT) on Thursday the 48-year-old stopped his car in Cobar, in the state's central west, and picked up a rifle from the rear of the vehicle.

While seated back in his vehicle, the man discharged the weapon, with a round hitting his thigh.

Passers-by assisted the injured man who contacted emergency services a short time later.

He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Cobar Hospital where he died about 3pm.

It's believed the man may have been out hunting wild goats.

Police do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances and will prepare a report for the coroner.
