Man dies after head-on crash in north Qld

A man has died after his ute collided head-on with a garbage truck on the Bruce Highway, south of the Cairns suburb of Edmonton.

A man has died after his ute collided head-on with a garbage truck on the Bruce Highway in north Queensland.

The 75-year-old died at the scene, while the garbage truck diver escaped injury.

The crash happened south of Edmonton, in Cairns, just before 2pm (AEST) and the highway remains closed between Gordonvale and Edmonton.

The fatality comes after a man died in a crash in Queensland's Toowoomba region on Wednesday night.
