Man dies during country Vic footy game

A young man aged in his 20s has died during an Australian rules game in regional Victoria.

A 24-year-old man has died during a game of Australian rules football in regional Victoria.

The Otway Districts Football Club player fell unconscious during a routine tackle and could not be revived.

"He dropped to the ground following a tackle," a Victoria Police spokeswoman told AAP.

People and ground staff came to his aid.

"CPR was being performed when paramedics arrived," an Ambulance Victoria spokesman said.

"They continued CPR but were unable to resuscitate the man and he died at the scene."

The on-field tragedy, at Gellibrand Recreation Reserve, occurred during Saturday afternoon's game between Otway Districts and Lorne football club.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
